In Episode 7, Meredith talks about getting ready for the season. The earlier you start your workout schedule the more you can ease into your workout schedule. Of course, all of the good work we did during the winter will also provide a good base for the season. The first thing to do is to establish goals for your inner athlete throughout the year. Do you want to run a 5k? How about 20 5Ks? Or do you want to do the Danskin sprint triathlon with Meredith? Establishing goals for training creates a positive accomplishment you can work towards achieving.
The next thing on the list for spring training is equipment. Take the time early on to evaluate and hone the equipment that is used in your chosen sport(s). Tune up the bike. Check your running shoes, goggles, rackets and whatever else you use to thrive in your sport. This is also a great time to replace the batteries in your Heart Rate Monitor and Heart Rate chest strap.. If you want to integrate new equipment into your sport, experimenting now before training accelerates gives you a good solid block of time to get used to the new piece of equipment.

Are you ready to "Do the Danskin?" If you are lucky enough to have a spare X-chromosome then sign up for one of 8 Danskin triathlon races across the country this summer. If you have any questions about the race just remember, Yes You Can!. You can train with <a href=http://www.trainforagoodtime.com">the folks at Jill B Nimble using Sally Edwards' Heartzones methodology. We're gonna have a blast this summer and you are invited.

Meredith also shares her experiences on the size yo-yo and muses what it is to be happy. When should one start taking care of oneself? When one reaches her goal? Meredith talks about living in the now and starting to care for our inner athletes whether they've reached their goals yet or not. Goal-reaching just like happiness occurs in the now!

In Episode #6, Meredith talks about using the winter to build a foundation for the physical fitness goals you want to achieve next summer. Now is a great time to take stock in what we have achieved in physical fitness in the past and to come up with a plan for how to achieve our goals going forward. "Shoring up our basic skills" in the off-season can be an integral part of a successful summer of physical fitness. If you are interested in triathlons, use the off-season to get more familiar with your bicycle, swimming and running skills.

There is a brief discussion about Podsafe Music: what it is and why Meredith uses it in My Inner Athlete.

The 10,000 steps program at Shapeup.org is a great way for women to start adding excercise to their day. 10,000 steps is approximately five miles. The key is to find out how many steps you take now and slowly but gradually work up to 10,000 steps a day. This a great way to keep your heart healthy and your body moving!

My Inner Athlete has a phone number and a "Mobile Minute phonecast". Call My Inner Athlete's number 408-731-6847 to leave a comment, send a "You Go, Girl!" to a listener, or make suggestions. You can also subscribe to our occasional Mobile Minute-Casts which promise to be full of tips for the day and special offers exclusive to the My Inner Athlete Listeners.

The September Project drive for Habitat for Humanity's Musician's Village in New Orleans was a success. There's still time to donate to the cause by going to the September Project Website. Donations encouraged by My Inner Athlete and September Project may even quailify as part of Dave Matthews' challenge grant where Dave promises to match donations dollar for dollar up to 1.5 million dollars.

Meredith's swim class with Olympian Dr. Jane Katz is going gangbusters! Meredith talks about how her swim strokes are improving, the fun of being in the pool and learning "The Butterfly" stroke.

Lose your Omentum! Meredith talks about a recent episode of Oprah with Dr. Oz. Curbing your calorie intake by as little as 100 calories/day can make a big difference. The key to maintaining successful eating habits is slow but gradual changes.

I've gotten many questions as to what my gear is for the Danskin Triathlon. Here's a breakdown:

Heart Rate Monitor
This is a must have for anyone who is at all serious about improving their health and well being while excercise. I just bought a new one (lost the old one)....It's another Sports Instruments. Here's a link:

I like Sports Instruments because it keeps your Heart Rate onscreen in addition to many of the other screens available (Lap timer, for instance.)

UPDATE! I've been working with my new HRM for almost a week and I love it. One of the great things about the Pro 9 is that it uses onscreen arrows to point you towards the proper button when you are trying to program it. This is a great monitor that you can use as a beginner but won't grow out of too quickly. This is a great buy!

Bike

I'm currently riding a Specialized Hybrid which I love. Even when I do upgrade to a road bike I think I'll always keep this bike. It's comfortable and perfect for strolling around the city or a park. My dream is to one day be a sponsor for trek and earn one of these Women Specific beauties.. The 2007 model is ice blue with lime green polka dots. Women Specific means more than just pretty to the people at Trek. They are designed to fit a woman specifically when it comes to leg length and torso length specifications. I took a test drive last year and I'm still salivating. Who needs a gas guzzling Hummer when you can have something like this?

Clothing

While there's a great new company called Triks that has some really comfortable sporting wear for women, I try to stick with Danskin whenever I can. They've done so much for Womens' Activity that I feel I owe them my loyalty. Aside from that, I think they make one of the best tri suits out there.

Okay that's a little nutshell of shopping for those who are interested. Here's a link to my amazon store where you can purchase some of the products listed here.

If you try out these products or find other ones feel free to let us know how you like them.

Welcome to "My Inner Athlete"; a podcast dedicated towards getting the sedentary active again...namely ourselves.
Ever sat on the couch so long you fear you're getting bed soars? Ever sat in your favorite rocker and felt guilty about just sitting there, and so decided to "exercise" by taking up knitting? Want to lead a healthier, more active life but don't know where to start? Well, you are not alone.

"The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over one billion people are overweight globally, and that if current trends continue, that number will increase to 1.5 billion by 2015.....*1*

It's not just about fat; or constrictive ideas about what makes a man or woman beautiful- it's about health. Heart disease is the number one cause of deaths globally. In America, it claims more deaths than the next four leading causes of death combined. We deserve better. You deserve better. I deserve better.

Let's find "better" together. Join me on my quest to seek out My Inner Athlete, lose those thirty pounds for the umpteenth and last time and complete my second triathlon in under two hours. While we're searching, we might even find your inner athlete. She's there; she's always been there. And she most certainly wants to get to know you.
